How to Use Amazon EC2

Assuming you have an Amazon Web Services account, using EC2 is simple. First, log into your AWS console and select EC2 from the services menu. On the next page, click the blue “Launch Instance” button.

On the following page, you’ll be presented with a list of AMIs (Amazon Machine Images). An AMI is basically a template for your virtual server. For this tutorial, we’ll use the Amazon Linux AMI, which is free. Select it and click the “Next: Configure Instance Details” button.

On the next page, you can leave all of the default settings as-is and click the “Next: Add Storage” button.

Next, we need to add storage to our instance. By default, each EC2 instance comes with 8GB of SSD storage located in what’s called an EBS volume (Elastic Block Store). For most applications, this is plenty of storage. If you need more than 8GB, you can increase the size of the EBS volume here. When you’re finished configuring storage, click the “Next: Add Tags” button.

Tags are optional but they can be useful for organizing your EC2 instances. For this tutorial, we won’t add any tags so just click the “Next: Configure Security Group” button.
